Academic After-School Support Classes

Here at Suncrest, learning doesn’t just take place between the starting and ending bells.  Kids take advantage of many before- and after-school programs thanks to generous funding from 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Youth Connections, JC Penney Afterschool, and Utah County Drug Prevention monies.

First off, those who need a little extra help learning the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics may attend Homework Club, Orchard, or ESL.  Homework Club offers students tutorial help on class assignments between the times of 8:00-9:10 a.m. and 2:15-3:25 p.m.  That way, “early-birds” can get their work done just after school, while “later gators” work before school.  While some students are placed into Homework Club by their teacher and/or parent, any willing student may attend.

Orchard, a computer-based learning program for students in grades 3-6, runs on the same schedule as Homework Club and is taught by Mrs. Jensen.  While in Orchard, students work on several learning tasks to help build skills in the core curriculum.  When they have mastered a given learning objective, they are automatically advanced to the next objective and so forth.  Classroom teachers decide where each child begins their Orchard work.  Placement into Orchard is done by the teacher and parent together.

English as a Second Language, or ESL, helps students communicate more fluently in English.  It is offered after school each day from 2:15-3:30 and from 3:30-5:00 for early-birds and later-gators, respectively.  The class is taught by Mrs. Buhler.  Placement into ESL is done by teacher recommendation, as well as ESL testing results.

Recreational After-School Clubs

Parents recognize that a well-rounded education includes exposure to recreational activities.  In response to this need, Suncrest offers several after-school clubs for students such as cooking, karate, arts and crafts, book club, chess, juggling, choir, drama, yoga, dance, soccer, basketball, Girl Scouts, and others!  Specific club offerings change from time to time depending on interest level as well as the expertise of available advisors.  Each club is held one day per week for a little over an hour over a period of approximately 10 weeks.  Additionally, students participating in after-school clubs are offered a snack.  The schedule runs as follows:

Monday                                        Tuesday-Friday

1:15 -2:30 Early-Bird Clubs      2:15-3:30 Early-Bird Clubs

2:30-2:50 Snack                         3:30-3:50 Snack

2:50-4:00 Later-Gator Clubs   3:50-5:00 Later-Gator Clubs

Registration for after-school clubs takes place in September and January.  See the school calendar for specific days and times.  A nominal charge of $5.00 per club is collected at the time of registration to help sustain the after-school program.  During the first round of registration, students are asked to limit their selection to two clubs.  Once everyone has had a chance to register, students may fill up any remaining spaces by signing up for as many clubs as they like.
